Holden Beach and Brunswick County Information

Welcome > Local Info > Holden Beach and Brunswick County Information ...

Let me introduce you to Holden Beach...

Once you take the time to visit Holden Beach, NC and the surrounding area of Brunswick County, you too, will become sold! We offer some of the most pleasant amenities, if peace and solitude while exploring our clean sandy beaches are high on your list of things most loved. Holden Beach takes you back in time! We offer open spaces with water seen from most locations. No high rise buildings on this beach can be found. Low density, no power lines to obstruct views and a family oriented atmosphere are amenities you can expect. On Holden Beach, NC there are limited commercial establishments which many consider a key attribute and keep them coming back year in and year out.

Holden Beach, one of the Brunswick County barrier islands, is located midway between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC – about a 40 minute drive to each. A dramatic bridge curves over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway bringing you to the island. As you cross over the bridge your view of the Atlantic Ocean is panoramic – people often stop to take a quick picture; it is that breathtaking.

Of course, we offer the beaches, but there is much more for those that love golf with over 125 courses available within an hour from the island. And, with Myrtle Beach, SC just 40 minutes away the golf opportunities just continue….

My favorite pastime is walking the beach. I walk every morning 2 miles east and enjoy the quiet as the sun rises over the east end of the island. You see, Holden Beach, is a south facing beach so our sun rises over the east end and sets over our west end. This is something to behold!

HOLDEN BEACH CHAPEL

The Holden Beach Chapel is a lovely part of the island. It is a non-denominational church and offers summer services at 8:30am and 11:00am each Sunday. There is Sunday school each Sunday morning during service, as well. Often during the summer there are activities for the children during the week, so check with the church upon arrival to see what may happening that your children will enjoy during their stay. 910-842-5700.

- HOLDEN BEACH TURTLE WATCH PROGRAM

The purpose of the Holden Beach Turtle Watch Program is to protect threatened and endangered sea turtles from extinction by educating visitors to our beach, by providing a sanctuary and safe environment for nesting turtles and hatchlings, and by aiding stranded turtles. The Holden Beach Turtle Patrol is an all volunteer, non-profit organization funded only by donations and the annual sale of program T-shirts available at The Lighthouse gift shop located on the Holden Beach Causeway seen as you approach the bridge to the island.

The following are some facts of interest:

- The sea turtle, as we know it, first appeared during the Triassic period 150-200 million years ago.
- Only females come ashore and that is to lay their eggs. To nest, they return to the beach where they were hatched. They will lay an average of 100 eggs per nest and will nest 4-7 times each nesting season, which is every 2-3 years.
- The nesting season begins on Holden Beach in late May and ends in September.
- You can help save the sea turtle by picking up trash on the beach, keeping all ocean facing lights turned off, filling in holes on the beach, not using fireworks, using a red cover on your flashlight when you are on the beach, education yourself on the protection of the sea turtle and calling our 24-hour Turtle Patrol Pager: 910-754-0766 if you sight a turtle.

-BRUNSWICK COUNTY SEAFOOD

Brunswick County, North Carolina, has long been known for its bountiful seafood. Local fisherman harvest seafood from shrimp and flounder to blue crabs and oysters depending, on the season and make it available to be sold at local markets. Many working the seafood business are second and third generation families that have embraced this difficult business supplying us with fresh seafood year in and year out.

Wonderful personal friends of mine Nicky and Jackie Varnam run Garland’s Fresh Seafood, Inc. It has been in the Varnam family since 1955.  Late in the summer or early fall, I get a call from Jackie saying “The white shrimp are in, how many pounds do you want”?  They proceed to take orders from all those that have enjoyed their service over the many years.  Then when the boats are in, the shrimp are headed, peeled and frozen in fresh water in zip lock bags. Usually 1 to 1.5 pounds per bag and these are made ready for pick up so we can enjoy “fresh shrimp” year round. Visiting Garland’s is a walk down memory lane with its open air market of fresh shrimp right there for the picking.  The cool breezes off the river, watching the ladies work the shrimp…the whole atmosphere is something you will long remember. You can contact Garland’s Seafood at 910-842-6492. Email: garlands@atmc.net

Another favorite of mine is Capt’n Pete’s Seafood, Inc. located on the island, under the Holden Beach Bridge.  Travis Elliott has been working Capt’n Pete’s Seafood for many years and this, too, is long held as a family operation.  Many a time during the summer I call over to Travis to see if they have fresh flounder available.  The answer is almost always “yes” if I call early. Otherwise those here renting for the week will get a head start on me.  Travis and his help do a fine job dressing the fish and having it all wrapped in ice, bagged and ready for pick up.  It is a treat to visit Capt’n Pete’s as it, too, is a fresh air market and the display for fresh seafood right there along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway makes for a special visit watching those do it as it has been done for decades.  You just don’t find this ambiance often. Contact Capt’n Pete’s Seafood at 910-842-6676. Email: telliott@atmc.net.
